Stratford is one of the worst parts of the UK when it comes to the road safety record. In 2013 there were four cyclist killed within only 8 days at one of the roundabouts in Stratford. This high number deaths on the road is comparable to the road safety in Dhaka in Bangladesh. So what make the locals love cycling so much if using bicycles here is so dangerous? It is almost certainly not a good sunny weather throughout the year here in Stratford!
Many of those killed on Stratford roads are the local residents who arrived to Stratford from overseas hoping to find better life here. Constrained by the lack of cash the locals are often forced to cycle to work as the cost of public transportation is too high for them. Daily travelcard allowing people to travel from Stratford to Central London costs at the moment £9.20 (May 2015). If you work five days a week you can get weekly travel card for £37.70. So to be able to commute in and out of Stratford safely (not using bicycle) you have to pay £150.80 over 4 weeks. To many Stratford residents this is far too much and this is why so many choose cycling and there are so many deaths here.
